Kratom is a tropical evergreen tree in the coffee family native to Southeast Asia. It's indigenous to Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea. It has been used in herbal medicine since at least the 19th century.
Kratom's scientific name is Mitragyna speciosa.
Kratom causes effects similar to both opiods and stimulants. Two compounds in kratom leaves, mitragynine and 7-a-hydroxymitrgynine, interact with opiod receptors in the brain, producing sedation, pleasure, and decreased pain, depending on dosage.
Mitragynine also interacts with other receptor systems in the brain to produce stimulant effects. When Kratom is taken in small amounts, users report increased energy, sociability, and alertness instead of sedation.
New users are recommended to only take 1-3 capsule(s) (1 capsule is 0.5 grams) or 1-2 gram(s) of powder at first, then wait at least 2 hours before taking more. The correct dosage often depends on a variety of factors such as:
- Your age
- Fitness levels
- Body metabolism
- And tolerance to kratom
Start with a very, very small amount to determine individual tolerance.
Some people take Kratom recreationally, for energy, for pain relief, or to help get off other drugs. Usually, the strong red strains (such as Red Vein Bali) are used to relieve withdrawal symptoms of opiate addiction. Just like other drugs with opiod-like effects, Kratom might cause dependence. Also, like with CBD and D8, it may be a good idea to talk to your personal doctor or physician before trying Kratom, in case you take certain medications that may react to it.
However, Kratom can also cause uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous side effects, most of the time this happens if you take too much. Reported health effects include nausea, itching, sweating, dry mouth, constipation, increased urination, and loss of appetite.
What does Green Vein, White Vein, and Red Vein strains of Kratom mean?
Green Vein: In between White and Red Veins. A more subtle effect but still stimulating. Mild energy boost, with mental clarity to focus and greater endurance. Green Vein Kratom strains are recommended for new users.
White Vein: Mild stimulant effect, associated with increased energy and alertness. Great for getting things done, or for a boost of energy.
Red Vein: Mild sedative effect, helps the user remain calm. Some use this for pain relief, although it has not been approved for this use. Red Kratom could be considered the most "mellow" of the three veins.
Please make sure you fully understand what Kratom is, how it affects the body, how it works, and what the possible effects are before consuming. Remember, if you're doing something for the first time, start out small!
